Your mindset can be a truly life altering thing. So creating a mindset that is focused on the positives can help you to attract more positive things in your life. Which is why it is so important to work on cultivating a positive mindset and becoming a more optimistic person. But that can be easier said than done! So today we are going to go over the steps for how to genuinely start being a more positive person.
However, before we get into this guide I want to quickly address that patience is important. You won’t be able to suddenly wake up tomorrow and change your entire mindset and be the more positive and optimistic person ever. You will have some great days and some days where being even 20% positive is a struggle.
And that is okay! And totally normal! The important thing is to stay on this journey and keep making small changes every day to work on being more positive. And be patient with yourself when you have a bad day and remember to try again tomorrow.
That being said, let’s get into this guide so you can start learning the process for how to genuinely start being a more positive person!

How To Genuinely Start Being A More Positive Person
Steps to take to have a positive mindset:
Step 1: Start doing positive affirmations (or your favorite mantra) every morning.
The first of these steps is all about starting your day right. Daily positive affirmations are an incredible tool for helping you have a more positive and happy mindset daily.
Starting your day by hyping yourself up and taking a bit to be positive is amazing for living a happier life. Because positive words can help to really encourage your mind to get into a positive mindset.
A few of my favorite morning affirmations are:
- I am capable of anything.
- The lessons I have learned have prepared me for today.
- I am creating the future I have dreamed of.
- My life is going exactly how I want it to.
- I believe there is so much good in the world.
Step 2: Get fresh air and natural light
Fresh air and sun light are so helpful for brightening up your day and helping you stay grounded and optimistic.
Take a scroll in the park. Or just a quick lap around your neighborhood plus this is also great for your physical health which can go hand in hand with your mental wellness.
Even sitting out on your patio will assist with helping getting you the fresh air and natural light to help improve your mood.
Step 3: Make a vision board.
Vision boards are a great way to think about what you want to accomplish and what you can accomplish! because you are more than capable of making your dream life happen. And focusing on that can help to encourage your mind to focus on the positives in life and in your future.
So take an afternoon and think about what you want your life to be like in the next few years for this activity. And think about the quality of life you are aiming for especially in correlation to this positive mindset journey.
I have a video where I shared my digital vision board for last year that you can check out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCbQJdZmvPM&t=4s
Step 4: Stop concerning yourself with others drama.
If you want to start feeling happier and more positive each day then it is time for you to learn this idea and stop thinking and talking about everyone else’s drama. If you find yourself in a social situation where everyone else is gossiping try to steer the conversation into something more positive. Eventually doing this and working on this will start to feel more natural and can have a positive impact on the people around you.
Negative people can create negative feelings in others and positive people can create positive emotions! No need to make someone else’s negative situation and attitude pull you down as well when you are focusing on being more positive. So avoid those people that are negative and cause drama in your life.
Also, another way to avoid drama is to be conscious about the media you consume. Specifically the social media! If you follow a lot of people that share drama and cause drama then try unfollowing them or at least muting them so you don’t see their negative content on your social media feeds.
Step 5: Practice gratitude with daily gratitude journals.
If you are lacking that mentality of thankfulness and gratitude then you need to start learning how to! When you are thankful for the things in your life and regularly taking the time to think about your blessings you will feel yourself start to feel more positive about yourself and your life.
Finding positivity in your days and focusing on positivity isn’t always the easiest and sometimes it involves using your inner strength to practice daily gratitude. So that even on your hardest days you are still focusing on positivity even in a small way of practicing gratitude.
One of the best ways to do this is to start doing daily gratitude journaling. This doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment. Just grab a gratitude journal (here’s one that is less than $10) and add it into your night time routine. It should only take about 10 minutes but it can really help you feel more grateful and happier.
Step 6: Smile more!
This follows an actually helpful idea of “fake it till you make it”.
Smiling, even if you are forcing it, helps to bring you joy and help brighten your mood. Think about things that naturally make you smile and focus on that for 10-15 minutes. Even if you REALLY don’t feel like smiling it’s worth trying to make yourself smile for a bit to help your mood.
Being naturally smile-y isn’t one of the personality traits I was born with so don’t worry if you weren’t either. It is absolutely something you can learn during your positivity journey.
*bonus tip- I find that putting a little effort into my smile makes me want to smile more! Get some whitening strips or a lip stick you have been wanting to incentivize yourself to smile more. And it can help to boost your self-confidence as well.
Step 7: Listen to upbeat music to put a smile on your face and help you have a positive attitude.
Upbeat music is great tool for improving your mood any time of the day.
If you have the opportunity to spend some time building up a positive and upbeat playlist on your Spotify account then that is one of the best ways to do this!
If not, then just search for anything like “upbeat” or “happy” and thousands of already made playlists will appear that you can use or use as inspiration.
It’s important to try and focus on songs with positive messages in addition to more upbeat tones, this will help maximize the effect that music can have on improving your positivity.
Step 8: Do small things regularly that bring you joy.
Does adding your favorite creamer to your coffee make you happy? Then do it! Does listening to your upbeat playlist make you happy? Then do it! Because those small things can make a huge difference in you having a more positive mindset.
Sit down for 20 minutes and brainstorm things that make you happy. Things that are simple but bring you joy and that you maybe don’t already do every day.
When you start making an effort to incorporate small things into your day that make you happier you will start to genuinely feel happier. Focusing on the small things can help you have positive results in being a more positive person! This is totally something that any optimists you will meet will also tell you the importance of.
Step 9: Get moving every day.
Next up is such a helpful step for living a happier and more positive life! Getting physical movement releases endorphins that seriously improves your mood. And helps you generally start to have a healthy lifestyle which has tons of benefits.
Daily activity even if it is just 20 minutes will help to release those endorphins. So take a walk, do a like home work out, or go ahead and commit to an awesome gym session. This is definitely a helpful one of the tips for happiness that also has lots of other benefits! It can also help you have more positive energy in the long-run as well.
Step 10: Practice regular self care in your everyday life.
Self care as basic as it sounds is one of the best ways to bring you happiness which can result in you being happy and cared for enough to be more positive.
So take some time to pamper yourself a little bit.
Get your nails done, do a spa night, put on some comfy pj’s and watch your favorite movie. Anything that makes YOU happy. Do not worry about spending time on yourself because you deserve it.
Take at least an hour to take care of yourself.
Step 11: Create daily routines that you love.
Daily routines are an essential part of creating the life that you want to have!
Which means if you want to be happier then you need to work on creating routines that help that. Start adding steps and elements to your morning, evening, and night routines that encourage positivity.

Step 12: Reflect on recent positive experiences!
Grab your favorite notebook and write down 5 positive things that have happened in the past month.
They can be major or more minor positive experience that has happened to you. Anything positive. There are plenty of positives in the world that are often overlooked and not appreciated!
Taking this time to reflect on positives will remind you of positive aspects of your life and help pull your brain out of it’s rut. This is actually a great routine to do once a month or even once a week, especially if it brings you joy and helps you live a more fulfilled life.
Step 13: Learn to ask about the silver lining.
This is one of the more difficult steps but it is so vital for getting into the right, positive mindset.
When you face difficult obstacles it of course can be challenging to stay optimistic. But one of the best ways to deal with that is to start learning to ask yourself to find the silver lining.
There is almost always a silver lining, even if it is tiny, in most negative situations so learn how to find it! This is especially important if you have a tendency to dwell on the negatives instead of looking for positives.
Step 14: Make an effort to add value to others lives.
Interpersonal relationships are also a helpful part of being happier. Happiness can be added to your life by bring joy to the lives of others.
Have you ever brought a giant smile to a kids face by giving them a gift or telling a funny story? Did that make you feel truly happy? Probably!
So if you are making an effort to make others happy and add value to their lives you will also be adding more value to yours. Value that will in the long run help you become a happier person. So start by trying to do one small thing a day that brings additional value to someone else’s life. And gradually this will become an actual habit in your life and can help you help others in such a positive way!
Step 15: Try finding a different perspective.
If you are trying some of these other steps and really struggling to get into a positive mindset then I recommend figuring out ways for you to find a different perspective.
That may be very different from person to person but the best way I recommend to do this is start journaling about what you are doing each day in your positivity journey. And once you get a better idea of what you are doing then overhaul that and approach your journey from a totally different way.
Optimism isn’t something that will necessarily be the same for everyone including that it can be different for you at different points in your life. So try a different perspective and remember to practice forgiveness for yourself if you are struggling to make progress as fast as you would like!
Step 16: Work on accepting when things go wrong or negative circumstances.
So many people feel negative and stuck in a rut because they aren’t embracing their current life. If you are always thinking about something that changed that you don’t love or something that went wrong then you won’t feel genuinely happy.
Start making it a change in your life and immediate reaction that when you think a negative thought about something that didn’t go as plan to instead start listing positives regarding it! Work on training your mind to see the positive in all situations and to accept changes.
