Idea 1) Limit screen time
The first and one of the most important ideas for improving your before bed routine is to limit screen time.
How long you go without screen time is completely dependent on how much time you CAN go without needing to check your phone. In general try to go about 30 minutes without using your phone or watching any TV before going to sleep.
Taking this time to avoid screens will help allow your brain to unwind before you start trying to fall asleep.
Idea 2) Master your skincare routine
Mastering your skincare routine is a great item to add to your routine before you go to bed.
If you are new to a skincare routine make sure to hit the basics: remove makeup, cleanse, treat, moisturize!
Idea 3) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Hydration has so many health benefits and before bed is a great time to make sure you are getting in plenty of water but make sure to give yourself about 20 minutes before actually falling asleep to stop drinking the water.
I keep a big water bottle next to my bed and try to drink the whole thing before going to sleep.
Idea 4) Read for 30 minutes
Reading before bed instead of watching TV or going on social media is great for your mind and your soul.
The best thing I ever did for reading more was to get a Kindle and sign up for Kindle unlimited so I can get a huge array of books. I try to alternate between fictional books and non-fictional, usually self improvement, books to keep up with this item of my night time routine.
Idea 5) Make your to-do list for tomorrow
Jotting down a to-do list for the next day the night before is a great way to set yourself up for success.
I keep a notepad by the side of my bed and list out the main things I want to (or need to) accomplish the next day and then go through and prioritize them and line it up in my planner the next morning!
Idea 6) Journal a bit
Journaling looks different for everyone but it can be very good for your soul and your mind to spend 15 minutes journaling before going to bed.
You can write down in a gratitude journal, journal about your day, or update your bullet journal for the day.
Bonus: here is how to track habits in a bullet journal with 50 habit ideas!
Idea 7) Quickly tidy up
Taking 15-20 minutes to tidy up your home is definitely not the most fun thing you can do at night but waking up to a clean home feels great and sets you up for a successful next day.
At minimum make sure you aren’t leaving dirty dishes in the sink and do a quick sweep of the main living area to pick things up!
Idea 8) Create a positive bedroom environment
Lighting a lavender scented candle and putting a soft weighted blanket on your bed can really help create a calming and positive bedroom environment which can help lead to better sleep at night!
Idea 9) Take your vitamins
Vitamins can help contribute to a healthier lifestyle and a lot of people prefer to take them in the morning but there are also certain vitamins that are better to take at night. Especially if you have a sensitive stomach!
Do research on your vitamins and figure out if they are better to be taken at night or the morning! I personally take some at night and some in the morning depending on which vitamins.
Idea 10) Go to bed at the same time
The final idea for items to add to your before bed routine is to get into a regular sleep schedule and try to go to bed at the same time every day.
Yes, that also means getting up around the same time even on your days off but it will help the quality of your sleep to get into a consistent sleep routine so it is worth it.
Best of luck implementing and creating a new positive before bed routine and incorporating these 10 ideas into your routine!

I recently moved in with my boyfriend and I’m still trying to nail down a routine. It’s so hard at this moment because I also got a new puppy. When I was living on my own my routine was nailed down and near perfection. I do try to do most of these but I do want to put my phone down before bed to read and I need to pay more attention to my skin care routine too.
