The first way to start believing in yourself is definitely the most crucial and one that you can’t skip past.
In order to really start to believe in yourself you need to have a honest understanding of what has help you back from believing in yourself before this moment.
I believe the best way to do this is to grab a notebook and start brainstorming and generally jotting down things that have made you doubt yourself in the past.
Ask yourself questions like these to help you figure out why you haven’t been believing in yourself:
- What is an instance that you needed to believe in yourself and couldn’t?
- Is there an opportunity you turned down because you didn’t think you could handle/do it?
- What are the negative things you tell yourself about yourself (negative self talk)?
- What situations happened in the past that you”failed” at that you think about a lot?
Once you have a better understanding about the honest reasons you don’t believe in yourself is when you can really start working towards how you can start trusting yourself and believing in yourself.
2) Work on trusting your decisions.
The next way to work on believing in yourself is to improve your trust in your own decisions.
If you are someone who is reading this post you probably don’t believe in yourself currently which directly correlates to not trusting your decisions. Second guessing and constantly doubting yourself makes it impossible to believe in yourself. Which mean you get stuck in this constant cycle of self doubt.
So for one month challenge yourself to not second guess your decisions. Put effort into immediately shooting down the questioning thoughts and remind yourself that you are capable of making good, correct decisions.
An exercise you can do for this is throughout the day write down every decision you make even if they are small. That way if you find yourself re-evaluating or thinking about a situation you can look down at your list and see if it’s a decision you already made. If you have made that decision then force yourself to stop thinking about it. And if you haven’t yet made that decision then make it and write it down on the list!
3) Learn to get out of your comfort zone.
The next big way you can work on really starting to believe in yourself is to get out of your comfort zone.

Because in order to work on believing yourself you need to see yourself handle and react to new situations and adventures that are outside of your comfort zone. That way you can practice believing in your ability to handle and thrive in these new scenarios.

4) Celebrate your successes no matter how small.
Celebrating your wins and successes no matter if they are big or small is a huge part of believing in you.
When you take a minute to pat yourself on the back and acknowledge a success you are not only practicing positive self talk but you are also forming a memory that you can use in the future when you are struggling with believing in yourself.
It can be something as small as taking a minute on your drive home from work to say out loud that you are proud of yourself and that you rock after you had a win at work.
Or you can always treat yourself to a Starbucks drink or something you have been wanting for a while to celebrate those mid-large successes. But it is never “conceited” to celebrate yourself. It’s actually essential to growing as a person and learning to believe in yourself.
5) Learn to set consistent goals.
Goal setting is a great way to work on believing in yourself.
This is because each time you set a goal you are thinking about something you haven’t accomplished yet but that you believe you can achieve.
I highly recommend working on setting daily, weekly, monthly , and annual goals. Tip: as you set longer term goals there should generally be less because those goals usually involve small daily steps to achieve them but a daily goal can be pretty small and there can be a lot of them!
I know that working on believing in yourself can be a daunting topic. But taking the time to trust yourself and work on bettering your relationship with yourself is so important for your mental wellness and success in life!
