9 Steps To Take To Become The Person You Want To Be

Actionable things to help you become the best version of you:

Step 1: Reflect on the past.

If you don’t know how you feel about your past then you can’t take steps towards bettering your future.

So take some time and reflect on your past. I really recommend doing this in the form of journaling! Getting your thoughts down on paper is a very helpful way to figure out what you truly feel.

Once you have reflected at the past and came to terms with how you feel about it you will be ready for the next stages of your life path.

Step 2: Journaling.

This activity is wonderful for helping you see through any filters you have up and get a better idea of your true self.

You can either approach journaling with or without prompts. If you are new to journaling and feel a bit uncomfortable with it it is usually best to start with prompts and then start working your way towards journaling without prompts. But prompts or not journaling is a self awareness activity that can really help you with personal growth.

A few journal prompts posts that can help with this are:

Also, if you want more prompts I highly recommend searching on Pinterest because there are so many great options.

Step 3: Make a vision board.

Vision boards are an activity that I encourage trying because they help you get an idea of your current life while also envisioning your best life.

Taking the time to think about and start to visualize where you want to be in relation to where you are now can really encourage self awareness and help align your mind with what you want from your life.

And you can do this activity more often now thanks to digital vision boards!

I have a video (link here) where it walks you through how I made my most recent digital vision board and some helpful tips and tricks.

Step 4: Start forming an actionable plan.

After you know what you want your dream life to be it’s time to start forming an actionable plan.

You probably have heard of SMART goals in school or work. And the idea of SMART goals is so important but I won’t tell you they need to be formatted like that. But I do really advise making an actionable plan for what you can do to make this dream life happen.

I find that just making a list of actionable steps you can take for achieving each element of your dream life is a simple but efficient way to do this!

Also, a little bonus tip is to make this action plan and then put it somewhere visible. When you keep keep your plan somewhere you see every day you are more likely to stick to it. I always recommend putting it in your closet or bathroom so you see it every single morning.

I also recommend grabbing a notebook like this “action plan notebook” for working on this tip!

Step 5: Hold yourself accountable.

Accountability is so important.

Honestly I can’t stress enough how important it is to hold yourself accountable in order to start living your best life.

You need to be honest with yourself and then also hold yourself accountable to the actionable steps that you made. If you aren’t holding yourself accountable then who will? Also, it can get a bit lonely on the journey of self improvement and creating your dream life. So it’s often best to focus on your own accountability rather than depending on others.

A good way to work on holding yourself accountable is to do a monthly check in at the end of every month. At the check in look at what progress you made this month and what you can do better or more of next month.

Step 6: Consume meaningful content.

What this step means is taking some time to consume content that helps align you with your future path.

Listen to podcasts, read some books, watch some videos all on different topics related to personal growth and topics specific to what you think you want in life. Especially if there is someone you really admire that has content that you can learn from.

Step 7: Make a list of your passions.

This step can really connect you with what you are dreaming of for your future.

It’s simple but can really get you in touch with what you really love and what is a priority to you. Just sit down and grab a notebook and just start making a brainstormed list of all of the things you are passionate about and what inspires you.

Then you can go back over the list and evaluate which you believe are truly the most important to you. This will help you realize what you should focus on during your personal growth efforts. And it will help you stay in touch with your emotions and what you really want rather than what you may think you (or others) want to be a priority on the surface level.

Step 8: Get out of your comfort zone regularly.

Getting out of your comfort zone means a lot more than just traveling to a new place (though travel is important, read about that below).

It means taking on new projects at work. You could start picking up a hobby you have always wanted to try. Or just trying new restaurants and coffee shops.

Making an effort to at least once a month but ideally once a week get out of your comfort zone can be life changing.

Step 9: Accept the changes.

This probably seems really obvious. And it is but it is still often forgotten!

When you aren’t in the mindset to accept things changing in your life then it will never change. Which means you can’t accept the changes that are necessary for creating your best life.

If you find yourself struggling to accept changes it is so important to address that. I recommend journaling to address it and following these prompts/questions:

  • What is the change you are struggling to accept?
  • How would this change play into your dream life?
  • What are you afraid of about this change?
  • What steps can you do to accept this change?
  • Visualize your future life with this change- what does it look like?

Hopefully those questions can help you start to accept that change so you can work towards creating your dream life.
