Steps To Take When You’re Wondering “What Am I Doing With My Life?”

How to figure out what is next for you in life:

Step 1: Reflect on the past.

If you don’t know how you feel about your past then you can’t take steps towards bettering your future.

So take some time and reflect on your past. I really recommend doing this in the form of journaling! Getting your thoughts down on paper is a very helpful way to figure out what you truly feel.

Once you have reflected at the past and came to terms with how you feel about it you will be ready for the next stages of your life path.

Step 2: Make a vision board.

Vision boards are a self awareness activity that I encourage trying because they help you get an idea of your current life while also envisioning your best life.

Taking the time to think about and start to visualize where you want to be in relation to where you are now can really encourage self awareness and help align your mind with what you want from your life.

And you can do this activity more often now thanks to digital vision boards!

I have a video (link here) where it walks you through how I made my most recent digital vision board and some helpful tips and tricks.

Step 3: Consume meaningful content.

What this step means is taking some time to consume content that helps align you with your future path.

Listen to podcasts, read some books, watch some videos all on different topics related to personal growth and topics specific to what you think you want in life. Especially if there is someone you really admire that has content that you can learn from.

Step 4: Write letters.

Writing letters to your past and future self is an amazing technique for practicing and experiencing self awareness. Which is very helpful for figuring out what you are doing with your life and what you want from the future!

You can either write letters to yourself at different points in the past to reflect on your past self. Or you can write letters to your future self so you can really be truthful with yourself about what you want in the future. And where you are now which is mainly where the self awareness comes into play!

Just grab an affordable set of letter writing tools (here is some) and you can keep the letters to read later when you need them. Especially when you are feeling the need to get grounded.

Step 5: Make a list of your passions.

This step can really connect you with what you are dreaming of for your future.

It’s simple but can really get you in touch with what you really love and what is a priority to you. Just sit down and grab a notebook and just start making a brainstormed list of all of the things you are passionate about and what inspires you.

Then you can go back over the list and evaluate which you believe are truly the most important to you. This will help you realize what you should focus on during your personal growth efforts. And it will help you stay in touch with your emotions and what you really want rather than what you may think you (or others) want to be a priority on the surface level.

Step 6: Get out of your comfort zone regularly.

Getting out of your comfort zone means a lot more than just traveling to a new place (though travel is important, read about that below).

It means taking on new projects at work. You could start picking up a hobby you have always wanted to try. Or just trying new restaurants and coffee shops.

Making an effort to at least once a month but ideally once a week get out of your comfort zone can be life changing.

Step 7: Stop comparing yourself to others.

Comparison can really destroy your motivation and mental well being. Which can put a sharp stop to your personal growth.

I recommend starting this with social media by reminding yourself that it isn’t a realistic look into others lives and that they have struggles too that you can’t see.

Step 8: Take a free online course

I am a huge supporter of learning new things as an adult and taking free online courses is a great way to do that. Interested in astronomy? Photography? Digital marketing? There is free courses online for everything and anything!

Growing as a person includes learning new things and online courses are a fantastic way to do this.

Step 9: Create a one year plan.

The final step we are doing to chat about is making a one year plan- sit down and make a plan for what you want the next 365 days to look like.

Remember a lot of these steps are about figuring out what you want your future to look like. And an incredible step for that is sitting down and actually creating a one year plan.
