Realistic Short Term Goals To Improve Your Life Right Now

Ideas for short term goals to start aiming for:

Health and Fitness

  • Drink More Water: Aim to drink 8 glasses of water each day. My best advice for making this possible is to start your morning right away with a big glass (ideally 16+ ounces) to start your day. This immediately sets you up for a hydrated start to your day.
  • Daily Walks: Commit to a 20-minute walk every day. Live somewhere where that isn’t safe or feasible to do outdoors? Try getting an affordable folding walking pad that you can use almost anywhere in your home.
  • Exercise Routine: Start a simple workout routine, such as 15 minutes of yoga or stretching. Finding an exercise that you at least remotely enjoy is essential for making exercise a realistic and attainable goal for you.
  • Healthy Eating: Incorporate one extra serving of fruits or vegetables into your daily meals. I love doing this by mixing in veggies into sauces or chopped up small in most dinner dishes.

Personal Development

Productivity and Organization

  • Declutter: Spend 10 minutes each day decluttering a small area of your home. You will be amazed at how helpful this is to making your home feel less chaotic and less stressful!
  • Task List: Create a daily to-do list with 3-5 achievable tasks. I am a huge fan of daily to do lists/goals lists because they help keep you on track and motivate you to accomplish more every day.
  • Time Management: Implement a simple time management technique, like the Pomodoro Technique, for focused work sessions. I have a whole bunch of time management techniques that I talk about here: 9 Time Management Systems That Will Help You Do It All
  • Digital Detox: Set a goal to reduce screen time by 30 minutes each day.

Financial Goals

  • Budgeting: Track your expenses and create a simple budget for the week. I find that at minimum tracking and categorizing where you are spending your money each week can be incredible for your financial literacy and success.
  • Save Money: Set aside a small amount of money (e.g., $5-10) each week into a savings account.
  • Reduce Spending: Identify one unnecessary expense and cut it out for a week. There is probably small things that you are spending money on that could add up quickly in savings instead!

Social and Relationships

  • Reconnect: Reach out to a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while. A phone call, text message, or even a hand written letter goes a long way to building healthier and more established relationships.
  • Quality Time: Spend 30 minutes of uninterrupted quality time with a loved one each day. Ideally with cell phones turned off or in a different room!
  • Acts of Kindness: Perform one random act of kindness each day. I shared some of my favorite acts of kindness here: 51 Ideas For Random Acts Of Kindness!

Mental Well-being

  • Gratitude List: Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. Starting or ending your day with gratitude can really help to put you into a more positive and optimistic mindset.
  • Positive Affirmations: Start your day with five positive affirmations. Here are some of my favorite positive affirmations that I love to recite or read in my mind daily: 62 Positive Affirmations For Self Confidence Improving And Growing!
  • Mindfulness: Practice being present by focusing on your surroundings for 5 minutes each day.

Career and Professional Development

  • Networking: Connect with a colleague or professional contact each week. This can be online or in person- either way, making and improving your connections can never hurt your career path.
  • Skill Improvement: Spend 15 minutes a day improving a work-related skill.
  • Set Work Goals: Identify and complete one small work-related goal each day.

Home and Environment

  • Clean-Up Routine: Spend 10 minutes each day tidying up your living space. The more frequently you do this the better, more natural, and more efficient your cleaning routine will become! And it will ultimately result in your home being consistently cleaner.
  • Green Living: Implement one eco-friendly habit, like recycling or using reusable bags.
