The Essential Steps To Doing A Life Audit

What to do during a life audit:

Step 1: Journal your answers to these questions for self-reflection.

This first step is all about being honest with yourself and answering these questions. So that you can truly know where you stand with these topics and get helpful insight into your life and how you feel about your life.

Questions to ask:

  • Why am I making my current decisions?
  • What do you wish was different in your life right now?
  •  Is there anything I feel like I’m missing in my life?
  • What should I be doing more of?
  • Why do I want to figure out my life?
  • What daily changes would I like to make?

And again, I want to remind you of the importance of being honest with yourself during these questions. You need to be clear with yourself what you truly want and what you truly believe. Also, keep an open mind in regards to what your answers are so you can truly know what you believe and need.

This will help be an essential step for taking stock of your life and why you believe you are where you are now.

Step 2: Create a vision of your dream life.

There are a lot of different ways that you can do this step.

But one of my personal favorites is vision boards!

Vision boards are a self bettering activity that I encourage trying because they help you get an idea of your current life while also envisioning your best life.

Taking the time to think about and start to visualize where you want to be in relation to where you are now can really encourage self awareness and help align your mind with what you want from your life.

And you can do this activity more often now thanks to digital vision boards!

I have a video (link here) where it walks you through how I made my most recent digital vision board and some helpful tips and tricks.

If a vision board isn’t your speed that is okay too! You could write out (paragraphs or bullet point, anything works!) your hopes, dreams, mantras that inspire you, the self-image you are wanting, and anything else that you envision for your dream life.

Step 3: Write down your life goals.

This next step is a simple part of auditing your life but it is essential for staying on track. And being able to evaluate where you are in relation to each individual goal.

The best way to do this is to write down all of your life goals and what you are wanting your life to look like. Once you start to think about this and visualize what you want your life to look like you can start to figure out the best ways to step out of your comfort zone.

This step should include all of your goals. Internal goals, external goals, small goals, huge goals. And even your short-term goals for your life. Any goals that you have for your life. This step is necessary for staying on track with your life and knowing you are making progress towards your goals.

Step 4: Make a list of your passions.

It’s simple but can really get you in touch with what you really love and what is a priority to you. Just sit down and grab a notebook and just start making a brainstormed list of all of the things you are passionate about and what inspires you.

Then you can go back over the list and evaluate which you believe are truly the most important to you. This will help you realize what you should focus on during your personal growth efforts. And it will help you stay in touch with your emotions and what you really want rather than what you may think you (or others) want to be a priority on the surface level.

Step 5: Prioritize your life focused on your core values.

Prioritizing is a very actionable tip for completing and sticking to a life audit.

If you aren’t practicing and feeling confident in your prioritization skills then you are missing out on some important parts of motivation!

Learning to focus on the most important tasks to you is a huge part of becoming a more self motivated person.

I recommend starting with just working on daily to do lists (here’s a cute pad!) to help you start doing daily prioritizing.

Also, working on taking real steps every day to prioritize your ideals and the things that are helping you become your best self. This will look very different for everyone but figuring out what priorities you have is the most important part of this.

Step 6: Make an actionable plan.

After you know what you want your dream life to be it’s time to start forming an actionable plan.

You probably have heard of SMART goals in school or work. And the idea of SMART goals is so important but I won’t tell you they need to be formatted like that. But I do really advise making an actionable plan for what you can do to make this dream life happen.

I find that just making a list of actionable steps you can take for achieving each element of your dream life is a simple but efficient way to do this!

Also, a little bonus tip is to make this action plan and then put it somewhere visible. When you keep keep your plan somewhere you see every day you are more likely to stick to it. I always recommend putting it in your closet or bathroom so you see it every single morning.

Step 7: Keep track of your progress.

Logging your progress each day is incredibly important for sticking to a life audit. And sticking to the progress that you are working towards making.

Get a wall calendar and log little notes each day about what your progress was including noting any struggles that you had that day.

By realizing what struggles you have then you can address those better the next day and continue to stay on track.

Step 8: Work on tuning out negative influences.

If you want to complete a life audit you also need to look at those that influence your life.

The best part of doing a life audit and growing as a person is that you don’t need to lean on anyone else to keep you motivated. And on track to achieve your goals. It can be really difficult to tune out those negative influences but putting in effort to not let someone else stop your motivation is so essential for bettering your life.

This is also generally one of the good habits that can help to improve the overall quality of your life.

Step 9: Re-evaluate often.

The final step is one we talk about a lot of improving yourself and making sure you aren’t heading towards your best possible future. And that is to re-evaluate often.

If you want to better your motivation levels in the long run and become a self motivated person then you need to re-evaluate when your life changes. When something changes in your life then your daily strategies, priorities, and lifestyle will change.

And so many people forget to re-evaluate when something changes and that can lead to a lack of focus and a lack of self motivation!

I know that this process can be a bit overwhelming. But there are so many wonderful benefits of doing a life audit.

And remember, you are in control of your life! You can take the actionable steps necessary to make your best life happen. You are able to really figure out where you are in life. And what the next steps you need to take to get there!

Don’t forget to be patient with yourself while you begin the journey after completing your life audit.
