So now that you have that inspo for your planner I want to share some tips for setting up your planner this year!

Also if you are looking for a planner for this year I am using the Erin Condren Life Planner that you can get here.

6 Essential Tips For Setting Up A 2021 Planner:

Tip 1) Don’t plan out too far in advance.

This is something that I believe in a lot (within reason).

I find that if I use a pen to plan out things and ideas really far in advance in my planner it causes me to scratch out a lot of things and makes my planner very messy.

So I do recommend penciling in things that aren’t this month and aren’t set in stone. That way you can keep a more logical and less messy planner.

In general I recommend doing an overall monthly plan at the beginning of the month and a more detailed plan weekly!

Tip 2) Find what systems work the best for you.

The next tip is that at the end of the day you have to do what works for you!

If my tips here don’t work for you that is so okay. It is way more important to do what is best for you not what anyone else does.

That being said, if you don’t currently know the system that works best for you don’t be afraid to experiment with different systems.

For me lots of to do lists work best so if you watch the video above you will see what I am talking about!

Tip 3) Pick the day of the week that works the best for your planning.

This is another tip related to doing what is best for you and what will make your planner work the best for you!

For me, I do my planning on Sunday nights. That works for the organization of my life and how my timeline each week works.

So finding what is the best for you is important! If you currently don’t know what day of the week is best for you to plan the next week then pick the ones you think will be the best for you and try them week after week until you find what works the best for you.

Tip 4) Avoid too much decoration.

Okay, I will admit I used to use a lot of stickers and decor.

And I loved it!

But at the end of the day it cluttered up my planner and made it harder to use. And anytime you make your planner harder to use or less enjoyable to use it can hurt your chances of actually using it. So if you are someone who loves decor on your planner don’t let me stop you! But if you are feeling obligated to decorate because a lot of “planner people” do then let me tell you that you don’t need to!

Tip 5) Color code at the beginning.

If you are someone who likes color coding in your planner do as much of it at the beginning as possible. Color code your headers or big events throughout the year in advance.

That way it will make it easier if you don’t always have those color pens with you to still have the general color coded sense that you want!

Tip 6) Customize as much as you want to.

The final tip is to remind you that this is your planner and you can customize any of it.

If you want to take pages out then do it! If you want to add things onto yours then do it!

Make your planner whatever you want and never be afraid to customize it.
