How To Make Your Mental Wellbeing Your #1 Focus This Year
How to start prioritizing your mental wellbeing:
1. Establish a Routine
- Consistency: Create a daily schedule that includes regular wake-up and sleep times, meals, exercise, and relaxation. When you don’t have to stress as much about what is next and it’s apart of a consistent routine you are not only helping your mental health directly but also allowing yourself more time to work on your mental health.

- Balance: Ensure your routine balances work, leisure, and self-care activities. This is of course easier said than done but if you are on a journey to better your mental state then balancing your work and life along with self care is essential!
2. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation
- Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness practices to stay present and reduce stress. For me I find that journaling is the best way for me to practice regular mindfulness.
- Meditation: Set aside time for meditation to enhance emotional health and reduce anxiety. I highly recommend checking our meditation apps and trying a few until you find the ones that connect with your mental state and your personal journey.
3. Maintain Physical Health
- Exercise: Regular physical activity releases endorphins, which can improve mood. When your mental state is struggling physical health often slips right along with it. And honestly they do go hand in hand.
- Here’s how to really make time for exercise (which is a drag I know but read this next) – How To Really Make Time For Exercise
- Nutrition: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. You are fueling your mind not just your body.
- Sleep: Prioritize quality sleep by maintaining a regular sleep schedule and creating a restful environment. This I’m sure isn’t surprising because we all have felt the mental state that is forced when we aren’t getting enough sleep.
4. Build Strong Relationships
- Social Connections: Foster relationships with friends and family to create a support system. Leaning on others is challenging for a lot of us (me included!) but it is so essential for every human. We need our fellow humans, specifically our loved ones to help us cultivate a stable and healthy mental state.
- Communication: Open up about your feelings and listen to others. Prioritizing and improving our mental health is nearly impossible if you are not open with others about how you are feeling. But you also must listen to your loved ones when they express feelings back!
5. Set Boundaries
- Personal Time: Ensure you have time for yourself to relax and recharge. We do live in a world that doesn’t always make this a priority but if you are feeling your mental health dipping and you want to prioritize it than you need to place boundaries around you to ensure you have the time to care for yourself.
- Work-Life Balance: Clearly define work and personal life boundaries to prevent burnout. I talk a lot on here about burnout so if this resonates with you then check this article out next!
6. Engage in Hobbies and Activities
- Interests: Pursue hobbies and activities that bring joy and satisfaction. Remember that not every (or any) of your hobbies and internets needs to be productive
- Creativity: Engage in creative activities like art, music, or writing. Prioritizing creative hobbies is a great and truly enjoyable way to help and prioritize your mental health!
7. Seek Professional Help
- Therapy: Consider therapy or counseling for professional guidance and support. This seems obvious which is why it’s in the middle of my list but I do want to add another reminder that seeking professional assistance is the best thing you can do when your mental health is struggling.
- Medication: If necessary, discuss medication options with a healthcare provider. I will never hide that medication helped me so much when my OCD was at its worse. There is nothing shameful or embarrassing about needing a medication to help your mental levels stabilize!
8. Develop Healthy Coping Mechanisms
- Stress Management: Practice techniques like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or yoga. This will be personal for you but making a stress management technique a priority in your life is an automatic way that you can prioritize your mental health daily. Because life is going to get stressful that is unavoidable but you can help yourself cope better with the stresses life throws at you so they don’t impact your mental health as much.
- Positive Thinking: Challenge negative thoughts and focus on positive aspects of life.
9. Stay Informed
- Education: Learn about mental health and stay informed about coping strategies and resources. There is certainly techniques and theories you haven’t heard of and one of those may be groundbreaking for you! Never stop learning.
- Awareness: Be aware of your mental health status and recognize when you need help. I talk a lot here about how to grow and improve your self awareness.
10. Limit Negative Influences
- Media Consumption: Monitor and limit exposure to negative news or social media. I have discussed on here quite a bit that decluttering your social media following is essential for mental health. You have no obligations to follow accounts that bring you stress, negativity, anxiety even if they don’t at all intend to do that!
- Toxic Relationships: Identify and distance yourself from toxic relationships that affect your mental well-being. Here’s some more information for that because it is a big task!
11. Practice Gratitude
- Gratitude Journal: Keep a journal to write down things you are grateful for daily. Or you can follow some of my daily gratitude journal prompts here: 51 Gratitude Journal Prompts For Practicing Daily Gratitude
- Positive Reflection: Reflect on positive experiences and accomplishments regularly. Take a minute before going to sleep to think about at least one positive thing that happened that day. No matter how small!
12. Stay Active in the Community
- Volunteer: Engage in community service or volunteer work to foster a sense of purpose. Find a way that you can use your skills to contribute to your community. It benefits others and your mental state. A Win-win!
- Group Activities: Participate in group activities or clubs to build connections and support networks.
13. Accept Imperfection
- Self-Compassion: Practice self-compassion and accept that itโs okay to make mistakes. You need to prioritize being understanding with not only others but yourself! We are so often our own worst critic but that is detrimental to your mental state. So take time to think about how you talk about yourself to both others and within your own mind.
- Realistic Goals: Set realistic goals and expectations for yourself.
And that is all for now my friends! I really hope this helps you focus on your mental wellbeing so you can feel all the amazing benefits!
