The Summer Spruce Up: 9 Ways To Get Your Home Ready For Summer!
My favorite ways to get your house spruced up for summertime:
1: Bring some outdoors inside your home
Summer is the time of the year that feels the best to bring not just the weather but also the vibes inside.
So let’s chat about a few ways we can do that:
- Open your windows- Let the literal air of summer fill your home. Even if it’s just a crack (don’t wanna cool the outside, I get it!) it can make such a difference to open up your windows even for an hour each day in the summer time.
- Plants- I am a big house plant gal but if there is ever a time to bring greenery and life into your home it’s during a summer spruce up. Read here about the easiest house plants if you are new to them!
- Incorporate live elements into decor- wildflowers, seashells, sand, even rocks (imagine a little display of pretty rocks from your summer adventures on the coffee table) and leaves can be added casually or intentionally bring the outside into your home! But hopefully without bringing in any bugs…
2: Swap to lighter linens
Curtains, bedding, table cloth/runners, etc.
During the colder months we tend to gravitate towards wool blankets, heavy curtains (I mean with such short hours what’s the point of anything else haha). Which is perfect when it’s chilly out but it is summer now so during your little spruce up swap to lighter linens.
I recommend focusing on natural fibers like linen and cotton- not only are they lighter and airier than artificial fabrics but they also last so much longer and are usually made in a fashion that is better for our earth 🙂
If you are looking for affordable but quality natural, and light linens then I HIGHLY recommend checking out Quince.
3: Embrace the summer scents
I might be a little bias here but summer scents are my favorite.
Fruity scents, fresh linen, beach scents etc are just everything for the summer season. And they are one of the easiest yet most effective ways to make sure that inside of your home feels like the season it’s reflecting outside!
Personally having flames in my home stresses me tf out so I prefer to use wax melts and room sprays instead – here are some that I am eyeing for this season:
Watermelon hard candy scoop-able wax melts (what? Such a cool concept)
Lemon sugar cookie wax melts from one of my favorite Etsy shops (and they are sooo affordable!)
Sea salt + orchid room spray which is wonderful to set the summer vibes in the morning or before hosting but without too much lingering smell that could irritate those a little more sensitive to scents.
4: Create an outdoor space you want to spend time in
A few folding chairs and a table covered in spider webs? Yeah no one is going to crave spending time out there.
So let’s go over some ways you can make that dream outdoor space-
- If you have the budget for getting comfortable outdoor furniture (and you don’t already) I more than highly suggest investing in that. Focus on furniture that you would actually want to spend hours sitting in.
- Deep clean it. I know that patios/outdoor living spaces are usually the bottom of the cleaning priority list. But if you want to make an outdoor area that you and your family actually want to spend time enjoying the warm weather in then it’s time to do a detailed deep clean. Also anything like old outdoor cushions that kinda grosses you out? Get rid of them- it’s better to be minimal than have things that deter you from sitting somewhere or being out there at all.
- Don’t forget lighting- if you want to use the space in the evening aka when the temperature is more pleasant in the summer then invest in some simple outdoor lighting.
- Combat mosquitoes- plants like lemongrass surrounding your outdoor space helps a ton! So does citronella candles, not having sitting bodies of water aka a bird bath, and fans (they literally blow the mosquitoes away) can make such a difference in fighting mosquitoes also known as my personal enemy.
5: Bring the vibes with pops of color
This is one of the most fun ways to spruce up your home! If you tend to lean towards neutrals in your decor like so many of us do then this is your sign to bring some color in when you’re sprucing up for summertime.
It doesn’t have to be anything crazy like adding a colorful printed wallpaper (though I do love that idea). Just adding a few colorful knickknacks (thrift for them to save money) around on your shelves. Another easy option is to swap our art prints you have hanging around for colorful and fun ones with a summer vibe.
6: Prioritize lighting
Lighting has an incredible power to change and set the vibes in your home.
But let’s chat specifically about how lighting can really spruce up your home for summer-
- Commit to one shade of light bulb throughout your home to keep the lighting vibes consistent. This will make your home feel a little extra put together with a pretty simple switch.
- Another light bulb option is one we love in my home- hue light bulbs. You can then get the app and control the tone of your lights. You can also set automations so you can gradually wake up to light- which is amazing year round but summer is the perfect time to try it out. They are also energy efficient 🙂
- Prioritize window treatments that make it easy to open them! Natural light is peak during summer so make sure your home gets to experience that. If any of your window treatments are too annoying to open then take this opportunity to change them out with ones you actually will open.
7: Florals, florals and more florals
Let’s chat florals aka one of my favorite topics ever! We are gonna break this down though because there is SO many options for how you can incorporate florals into your home during your summer spruce up.
- Live florals- fresh flowers are the embodiment of summer in my mind. Trader joes of course is known for gorgeous and affordable florals that you can arrange yourself. But there is also nothing wrong with picking some wildflowers for free instead!
- Faux florals- don’t feel up to the commitment of live florals? I feel ya and thankfully there are amazing “real touch” faux florals now that will give the same vibe without the work.
- Dried florals- my personal favorite is dried florals, they are real flowers with all the looks and some of the scent too but with the longevity of faux florals. You can even hang and dry your own florals if you’re feeling ambitious and looking for a fun DIY.
- Floral prints- not a “flowers in a vase” kinda person? No worries- you can add floral vibes into your home this summer with floral printed blankets, throw pillows, placemats, or bed sheets!
8: Put away all signs of winter
Alright lastly we are going to talk about the most obvious yet the most commonly forgotten way to make your home feel like home: eliminate all signs of winter!
Do you really need those winter coats hanging I and cluttering up the coat closet when it’s 100 degrees out? Nope! So put them in a less visible place (personally love getting under bed rolling bins for seasonal clothing storage).
Heavy blankets? Fold them up and put them in the linen closet. Only keep summery options out and visible!
I could go on and on but the reality is that what feels like and reminds you of the colder months will be somewhat personal. So I recommend just committing 10 minutes of your spruce up day and walk around your home. Pause in each room and survey it- ask yourself what in here FEELS like winter time?
