6 Life Changing Time Management Skills To Master

Time management skills to make your dream life happen:

Skill 1: Time logging

This is the first time management skills I want to discuss because it is the one I use the most and I completely swear by it.

Time logging is very simple. It just means at the end of every half hour or hour you log what you completed in that time frame. Generally I find that hourly works the best. Also because then you can use an hourly planner (like this one) for doing the time log.

I find it to be so helpful to learn the skill of time logging for two reasons:

Reason 1: it gives you an idea of where your time is going. If you feel like your days are flying by and you aren’t accomplishing enough it can be incredibly helpful to do a time log every day for a week.

Reason 2: it keeps you on track and holds you accountable. When you are aware of what you are completing it can make sure that you know what you have finished so you can plan to get everything you need to get done actually done that day.

Skill 2: Write to-do lists

I live by to do lists and find it so insanely helpful to write to do lists for each day, week, and month. This can be in your planner, on a notebook, or on a note on your phone. Learning to write helpful to do lists can be a life changing time management skill to learn that also isn’t too hard to learn.

I like to make sub to-do lists as well, like I will do a more vague to-do list for the whole day and then do a list for my work, a list for cleaning, a list for my site, etc.

If you want more details on how to write and really follow your daily to do lists then you need to go check out my detailed guide: How to Make an “Every Day Goals” List.

Sill 3: Learn to prioritize

Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize.

This is a beyond helpful skill to learn for learning to manage your time better.

If you find yourself at the end of the day wishing there were more hours in the day then it is certainly time for you to learn some prioritizing skills. The reality is that you can’t always accomplish everything you want to everyday. Which means you have to make sure that you prioritize what you really want to get done to ensure there is time for it.

Prioritizing starts to become more and more natural as you do it and you will start to feel the positive effects of it and feel that you have more control of your time.

Skill 4: Use down time efficiently

This is another skill that I annoyingly don’t stop talking about.

Finding time where you aren’t being productive but also aren’t relaxing or spending time with family/friends are time holes and using them more efficiently can turn your day around!

One of the biggest down time holes that can suck away potentially useful time is your commute. For majority of people it is unavoidable but there are tons of ways that you can use that time to improve your day. I wrote up a whole list of ideas of what you can do to make your commute time more productive.

Skill 5: Use a weekly planner

This skill has a lot of elements to it but ultimately the idea is learning to productively use and stick to your weekly planner. Use this day to either buy a weekly planner or to improve on the one you already have.

Create a system that you like for noting important events, deadlines, appointments, etc. That could be planner stickers or colorful pens. Just focus on creating a system for your weekly planner that you will stick with. Because actually sticking to your planner is a skill that can really help you stay on top of your life. Which is so essential for living and making your best life happen.

Skill 6: Learn to task batch

Task batching is a skill that can seriously make your days more efficient. Which is beyond helpful for helping you get more things done each and every day.

This is a time management skill that a lot of people in creative or marketing fields will really benefit from trying. But most people will benefit from it at least somewhat!

The idea of it is that you batch together a lot of things at once. For example, if you are a social media manager this would be batching a whole months worth of Instagram content photos in one day. And then the next day making all the captions. Then the next batching Instagram story graphics.

The reason this skill works so well is you can really get into the grove of a certain task and often you save time by not having to set things up every day. Getting a whole bunch of a similar task done at once can also help give you some “emergency space” so if something comes up in two weeks you have already finished a lot of the more time consuming work. So an emergency doesn’t totally wreck your day!
