“Grandma Hobbies” we should all be trying!
My favorite grandma inspired hobbies:
Hobby Idea 1: Plants and/or gardening
First up is one of if not my favorite grandma hobby and it is all things plants!
I find the progress of getting, nurturing and watching plants grow to be genuinely so relaxing and calming. And rewarding! I love that you can see your hobby grow and flourish.ย Seriously there is nothing better than growing your first tomato or propagating your first pothos.
I fell so in love with plants and gardening in my 28 years on this earth that I started a whole additional site for it so if you’re feeling inspired head there next: talkplanttome.com

2: Embroidering / Needlepoint
Next up is a hobby that personally I can say is beyond addicting. The options are endless when it comes to the embroidering / needlepoint / cross-stitch world. Take some time to scroll through Pinterest to see what needle based projects jump out at you. Then use those favorites to decide which needle craft you want to try to learn first!
My current embroidery project? Well I am so glad you asked ๐ It’s this plain shirt that I am covering in adorable embroidered florals!!
Follow on instagram for updates on it!!
3: Letter writing
Not one that personally I have taken up but many friends and family members have and it’s so wonderful. Being able to connect with others in a slower, intentional way is so much more than a grandma hobby- it’s a conscious effort to focus on real human connection!
There are TONS of Facebook and Instagram groups for meeting other people from all over the world who are also interested in finding new pen pals. Search for penpal or letter writing groups and get going on this fulfilling hobby!
4: Flower arranging
This is a hobby I have been super into lately (check out some of it on my Instagram here) and I have completely been loving it.
Itโs amazing how fast time passes when I am arranging flowers and how calm and happy I feel during it. Plus, it makes my home feel more welcoming and happier to have fresh flowers in it.
This doesnโt need to be a complicated hobby. You can totally start with getting grocery store flowers and arranging them into bouquets by yourself. No need for it to be super expensive!
5: Scrapbooking
So maybe this is the early 2000’s kid in me but scrapbooking feels like the most cozy and comforting hobby. Hanging out in the basement with wine pouring, your buddies bringing their fun supplies, and hanging out scrapbooking with 2000s country blaring with your friends sounds like the perfect Friday night. Nostalgia aside- let’s bring back scrapbooking so we can be more intentional spending time looking at memories and beautifully and creatively displaying them!
An alternative or modern version in my opinion in junk journaling which is also a wonderful hobby to pick up. Head to Pinterest for so much junk journaling inspo. Personally I am combining the two and adding both random “junk” I have saved over the years and printed photos on cute pages. Follow along on TikTok as I share this fun journey ๐
6: Antiquing
You have to DRAG me out of antique stores and I am 28 so don’t ever feel like you are too young to enjoy the joys of antiquing/thrifting. You will experience a high like no other when you find an insane gem sitting on a random shelf for $3.99. It’s also where I get so much of my decor and household goods because they just used to make them more durable what can I say! Metal cookware over plastic every day and you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on it either- just head to a local used goods store!!
Also- if you have never been to an antique mall then I need you to clear a whole day, grab a bestie or your mom, and head to the nearest one. Antique malls are the coolest places, they are a ton of booths that people in your area curate with antique finds (and sometimes really cool up cycled/ refurbished pieces too!).

7: Romance Reading
BookTok is our generations version of the romance novels our grandmas read but I think they would LOVE it over there too!!
Seriously I am so thrilled that reading is coming back because it shouldn’t have ever been a trend! And we should read what we want and ladies (and gents) romance books are so fun to read. I love personally some nonfiction reading too BUT I also strongly believe that any reading is 100% valuable. Grab yourself a kindle if you haven’t yet and then head over to booktok for some recommendations you will love.
8: Scratch cooking
My grandma has this insane ability to use up everything in her fridge with scratch cooking before it goes bad. And it is a lesson I didn’t appreciate nearly enough as a child but as an adult I not only admire this I also aspire for it! Less food waste and more fresh food? A total win!
Start slow and start learning how to scratch cook- not only is it a wonderful hobby to learn and spend your time on, it’s also basically the most useful.
9: Calligraphy
Handwriting as an art is disappearing which is pretty tragic in my opinion.
So more of us need to learn it again like the generations before us! But we can do it way more fun now lol- head to Facebook and search on events for calligraphy classes to get you started. I have lived in 4 cities now and all have had different local businesses (often stationery stores) that offer the classes. Also- at least in Charlotte there is a ton offered at breweries in the area like?? Cold beer and learning how to write calligraphy to make the world a prettier place? The dream!!
10: Group board games
Mahjong anyone? Scrabble? Checkers?
Board games are a fun way to keep your mind sharp and spend time with friends or family! And take some advice from our grandmothers generation and learn a game with your friends that can be a focal point for getting you and your women together to catch up and stay sane in this world!
11: Sewing
Last grandma hobby I want to chat about today is sewing-
This is a vague hobby in my opinion because what you can do with sewing is endless. You can add fun elements to clothes, tailor them, even create your own clothing! OR you can opt to learn how to make blankets or other home goods with your handy sewing machine. Or all of the above. There are so many fun options and honestly the logistical benefits of being able to tailor your own clothes alone is worth learning sewing as a skill.
And that is all for now my friends! Make sure to keep scrolling for your next read to help you become your best self this year ๐
