Sneaky Bad Habits To Avoid and How To Stop Them!

These bad habits can hide in plain site:

Bad Habit- Checking Your Phone First Thing in the Morning

Grabbing your phone immediately (like before you even get out of bed) can start to feel like a natural part of our routines in this modern world. But it’s time to shake that belief because actually checking your phone before your brain and body wakes up is actually a terrible habit!

Your brain needs to start functioning before getting bombarded with an unfiltered amount of news and connectivity.

How to stop it-

Tip 1 is to put your phone across the room. Don’t tempt yourself! But also, this has the benefit of helping you get up right away in the morning without hitting snooze. A win-win!

And tip 2 is to create a non phone based morning routine that you look forward to. Does journaling with a cup of coffee sound like the perfect morning? Or a music filled get ready session? Whatever is best for you and your life make that your priority in the morning instead of checking your phone right away.

Bad Habit- Saying “Yes” to Everything

You have good intentions. Probably great and genuine intentions! But the thing about this bad habit is that it hides behind those intentions.

Being overly accommodating can lead to burnout and resentment!

While it’s great to be helpful, saying “yes” to every request often means saying “no” to your own priorities.

How to stop it-

Work on saying no to small things first. Turn down a party invitation that you don’t want to attend. Tell a coworker no when they ask you to cover their work…again…

You can explain to them or not, it’s what you feel comfortable with but start building the skill of saying no to things so you can protect your peace. Remember- you can’t give your loved ones your best self if you are pouring from an empty cup.

Bad Habit- Mindless scrolling

So I might be a little hypocritical here because I haven’t shook this bad habit. But I do believe with my whole soul that mindless scrolling is one of the most detrimental things in our modern society.

We lose hours and hours to consuming more content than anyone should take in during a day. We get thrown news from all over the world at us, we get opinions shoved in our faces of people whose opinions we would never value in real life. And when we aren’t intentional about our social media time we really can hold back our personal growth and even more our mental health backwards.

How to stop it-

Timers!!

I am not going to tell you to delete social media apps. Because honestly my friends I never will.

But I do swear by the power of setting a timer for 15-20 minutes when you are opening a social media app. Then when that timer goes off you need to put down the phone. Not just close out of the app!

Bad Habit- Multitasking

So if you are new here- hi I am Korra and my worst enemy is multitasking.

It’s something that we immediately correlate with productivity. However, it does the opposite in reality! When your brain is rapidly switching between tasks (aka what multitasking has to be) you are actually causing down time between in switch.

This means that instead of spending 20 minutes on one task and 20 on another if you just started and finished each by themselves. But multitasking involves so much switching time that your total will end up taking 45 minutes instead of 40.

And those 5 minutes add up when it happens over and over!

How to stop it-

Pretty simple on this one- stop trying to multitask.

But don’t get that confused with background tasks. Background tasks are things you start in the background that you don’t actively have to do (like running the dishwasher). Background tasks are great, but multitasking isn’t!

Bad Habit- Comparing Yourself to Others

Thanks to social media, it’s easier than ever to fall into the comparison trap!

Constantly measuring your life against someone else’s highlight reel can leave you feeling inadequate which is not only inaccurate it’s also cruel.

This bad habit can easily sneak into our minds when we aren’t looking for it too. Making it a habit we all have to make a conscious effort to both spot and fix.

How to stop it-

Working through the temptation and often instinctual desire to compare ourselves to others that we perceive as doing better than us is hard to overcome.

But the most important way to is by recognizing we are doing it and then reminding ourselves of our strengths and that we never know everything about others lives.

Bad Habit- Ignoring Boundaries

Whether it’s work-life boundaries or saying no to draining commitments, failing to set limits can lead to exhaustion. Protect your time and energy by knowing when to draw the line!

When you don’t prioritize and enforce your boundaries you are just setting yourself up too be disappointed by others in your life.

How to stop it-

Enforce your boundaries including within yourself and your own actions!
