How To Start Optimizing Your Sleep

Tips for getting better and the most sleep:

1. Create a Consistent Sleep Schedule

  • Set a Regular Bedtime and Wake Time: Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock. I know it isn’t fun but the more consistent you are able to make your sleep schedule the better your sleep will become. Oh, and the easier it will become to fall asleep and wake up.
  • Avoid Drastic Changes: Gradually adjust your sleep schedule if needed, rather than making sudden changes. Of course this isn’t always an option with different careers, parenthood, etc but making the effort as often as you can will make a difference!

2. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine

  • Wind Down Before Bed: Engage in calming activities like reading, listening to soothing music, or taking a warm bath. I also recommend not going on your phone or laptop or anything where you can consume a lot of new information right before bed. We will talk more about this in a second!
  • Avoid Stimulants: Steer clear of caffeine and nicotine in the evening, as they can interfere with your ability to fall asleep.

3. Optimize Your Sleep Environment

  • Comfortable Bedding: Ensure your mattress and pillows are comfortable and supportive. Finding a pillow that works best for you is totally worth the effort it takes to find it.
  • Dark, Quiet, and Cool: Keep your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool. Consider using blackout curtains, earplugs, or a white noise machine if necessary. I personally use an air purifier as my white noise machine and it works awesome.
  • Limit Electronic Devices: Remove or minimize electronic devices that emit light, such as phones, tablets, and computers.

4. Limit Screen Time Before Bed

  • Avoid Blue Light: Reduce exposure to blue light from screens at least an hour before bed, as it can suppress melatonin production.
  • Use Night Mode: If you must use electronic devices, enable night mode or blue light filters.

5. Watch Your Diet

  • Avoid Large Meals Before Bed: Eating large or heavy meals before bedtime can cause discomfort and disrupt sleep. Food coma? Doesn’t actually help you sleep. As long as you aren’t hungry you are better off not eating (especially a lot of food) right before bed time.
  • Limit Alcohol: While alcohol may make you feel drowsy, it can interfere with your sleep cycle and reduce sleep quality.

6. Exercise Regularly

  • Physical Activity: Engage in regular physical activity to help you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper sleep. I truly swear by this, if I go a few days without exercise I find it harder to both get to sleep and stay asleep.
  • Timing Matters: Avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime, as it can be stimulating. Aim to finish exercising at least a few hours before bed.

7. Manage Stress and Anxiety

  • Relaxation Techniques: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to calm your mind.
  • Journaling: Write down your thoughts or worries before bed to help clear your mind and reduce anxiety.

8. Monitor Your Sleep Patterns

  • Sleep Tracking: Use a sleep diary or a sleep tracking app to monitor your sleep patterns and identify factors that may be affecting your sleep.
  • Adjust Accordingly: Make adjustments to your routine based on what you learn from tracking your sleep.

9. Get Natural Light Exposure

  • Daylight Exposure: Spend time outside during the day to help regulate your sleep-wake cycle. Natural light exposure, especially in the morning, can improve your sleep quality.

10. Avoid Napping Late in the Day

  • Limit Naps: If you need to nap, try to keep it short (20-30 minutes) and avoid napping late in the afternoon or evening, as it can interfere with nighttime sleep.
