What You Need To Do Before Christmas Checklist

Things to do before the holidays start:

The holiday season is just around the corner, and there’s a lot to do before Christmas arrives. To make sure you’re well-prepared and can enjoy a stress-free holiday, I’ve put together a handy checklist. This checklist covers everything you need to do to ensure a smooth and joyful Christmas celebration.

1. Create a Budget: Determine how much you can afford to spend on gifts, decorations, and festivities. Stick to your budget to avoid financial stress.

2. Make a Gift List: Write down the names of everyone you plan to give gifts to, along with gift ideas for each person. Don’t forget to include stocking stuffers and small tokens of appreciation.

3. Start Shopping Early: Begin shopping for gifts as early as possible to avoid last-minute stress. Consider online shopping to save time and reduce crowds.

Bonus tip – keep your gift list from above handy so when you get an email about a sale or walk past a store with something that catches your eye you can immediately check what gifts you still need!

4. Decorate Your Home: Plan your holiday decorations and start decorating your home early in December. This includes putting up the Christmas tree, hanging lights, and arranging festive decor.

5. Send Out Holiday Cards: If you send holiday cards, prepare a list of recipients and address the envelopes. Don’t forget to buy stamps and send them out in time for delivery.

Tips for sending holiday cards:

  1. Start Early: Don’t wait until the last minute to send out your holiday cards. Plan ahead and start addressing and preparing them well in advance. This will help you avoid the stress of rushing to meet postal deadlines.
  2. Organize Your List: Create a list of recipients, including their names and addresses. Organizing your list beforehand will make it easier to address the cards and ensure you don’t accidentally forget anyone.
  3. Personalize Your Messages: Take a moment to include a personalized message in each card. Mention something specific or share a warm holiday wish. Personal touches go a long way in making the recipient feel special.
  4. Choose Quality Cards: Invest in quality holiday cards that reflect your style and the message you want to convey. High-quality cards with appealing designs and durable paper stock are more likely to be cherished by recipients.
  5. Check Postal Deadlines: Different postal services have specific deadlines for holiday mail. Be sure to check the deadlines for sending cards both domestically and internationally. Sending cards on time ensures they reach your loved ones before the holidays.

6. Plan Your Meals: Decide on your Christmas Eve and Christmas Day menus. Make a grocery list and shop for non-perishable items ahead of time.

If there are food items like desserts you can prep in advance I also recommend doing that so you can spend less time cooking and more time with family and friends during the holidays!

7. Wrap Gifts: Set aside time for gift wrapping. Organize wrapping paper, ribbons, and tags. Consider enlisting the help of family members to make it a fun activity.

8. Bake and Cook Ahead: If you’ll be doing any holiday baking or cooking, prepare some dishes in advance and freeze them. It will save you time on the big day.

9. Check Your Decorations: Test your Christmas lights, replace any burnt-out bulbs, and make sure all your decorations are in good condition.

10. Plan for Travel: If you’re traveling for the holidays, make travel arrangements well in advance. Check flight or train schedules and book accommodations if needed.

Insider (ish) tip- did you know most places (minus basically NYC) in the US and abroad are affordable to travel to during and right around Christmas. It was our slowest time and lowest prices for domestic hotels. Also, if you have points for hotels or airlines it’s a great time to use them because they tend to run specials!

11. Stock Up on Essentials: Ensure you have enough everyday essentials like toiletries, cleaning supplies, and pet food to last through the holiday season.

12. Organize Holiday Events: If you’re hosting holiday gatherings or parties, plan the details, including guest lists, menus, and entertainment.

13. Donate to Charity: Consider giving back during the holiday season by donating to a local charity or volunteering your time.

14. Set Up a Wrapping Station: Create a designated area for gift wrapping with all the necessary supplies.

15. Plan for Traditions: Whether it’s attending religious services, watching holiday movies, or making gingerbread houses, plan and schedule your favorite holiday traditions.

16. Prepare for Guests: If you’re hosting guests, clean and prepare the guest room and ensure you have extra bedding and toiletries.

17. Enjoy Some “Me” Time: Amidst the holiday preparations, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Set aside moments for relaxation and self-care.

Me time ideas around the holidays:

  1. At-Home Spa Day: Treat yourself to a spa day without leaving your home. Run a bubble bath, put on a face mask, and pamper yourself with your favorite skincare products. Play soothing music, light some candles, and create a tranquil atmosphere.
  2. Reading Retreat: Escape into the pages of a good book. Whether it’s a novel you’ve been eager to read or a stack of magazines, find a cozy corner, snuggle up with a warm blanket, and get lost in the world of words.
  3. Nature Walk: Take a peaceful walk in nature to clear your mind. Whether it’s a nearby park, a hiking trail, or even just a stroll around your neighborhood, spending time outdoors can be incredibly refreshing.
  4. Creative Outlet: Engage in a creative activity that brings you joy. Whether it’s painting, knitting, writing, or crafting, tapping into your creative side can be both relaxing and fulfilling.
  5. Mindfulness Meditation: Dedicate some time to mindfulness meditation to center yourself and reduce stress. There are many guided meditation apps and videos available that can help you get started.
  6. Coffee Shop Getaway: Sometimes, a change of scenery is all you need. Visit a cozy coffee shop, order your favorite drink, and enjoy some quiet time people-watching or journaling.

18. Confirm Plans: Reach out to family and friends to confirm plans for get-togethers and gatherings.

19. Stay Safe: Keep safety in mind during the holiday season. If you have a Christmas tree, water it regularly, and be cautious with candles and holiday lights.

20. Embrace the Spirit: Most importantly, embrace the spirit of the season. Take time to reflect on what Christmas means to you and cherish the moments with loved ones.

By following this checklist, you can ensure that you’re well-prepared for the holiday season and can fully enjoy the magic of Christmas with peace of mind. Happy holidays!
