Sometimes, the idea of traveling sounds amazing until you remember the cost, the stress of packing and my personal nightmare… the endless lines at airport security. That’s when a staycation starts to look like a much better option. No flights, no lost luggage, no expensive hotel rooms or disappointing airbnb (they are always a little disappointing right?!) Instead you can have relaxation and fun right where you are.
The trick to making a staycation actually feel like a real vacation is all about mindset and preparation!
If you just lounge around in your pajamas watching reruns, it’s going to feel like any other weekend. But with a little effort, you can turn your home or city into a destination worth exploring. Here’s how to make your staycation feel like an actual escape so let’s get into it-

How To Make a Staycation Feel Like a Real Vacation
Plan an amazing staycation tips:
Change Your Routine to Get That “Vacation Mode” Feeling
One of the best parts of a vacation is stepping out of your normal routine, so if you want your staycation to feel special you need to start by making small changes.
Sleep in without guilt or wake up early to catch the sunrise from your balcony. Swap your usual morning coffee spot for a new coffee shop and cafe or maybe take the time and try making a new breakfast recipe.
If your normal day consists of answering emails or doing chores, set some boundaries. Put your phone on do-not-disturb, turn off email notifications, and act like you’re really out of town!!
Even if you’re just a few feet from your laundry pile it’s time to pretend it doesn’t exist for a few days.
Plan Fun Activities Like a Tourist in Your Own Town
You know all those places in your city you always say you’ll check out someday? Your staycation is the perfect time to actually go. Visit a new art museum, try a niche restaurant or take a scenic drive to a nearby park. If there’s a cute bookstore, an art gallery, or a hiking trail you’ve been meaning to explore and keep saving tiktoks or reels about… now is your chance.
If you want to go all out, make a full itinerary just like you would on a vacation. Research local attractions, book a spa day or sign up for a fun class like pottery or wine tasting. Treat your town like a brand-new destination and you’ll be surprised by how much there is to do.

Transform Your Home Into a Hotel Experience
Opting to stay in your home for your staycation (remember that is an option! But local hotels or airbnbs also help you escape if you can justify the cost.)
Nothing makes a staycation feel more luxurious than upgrading your home experience. Start by deep cleaning your space so it feels fresh, then add little touches that mimic a hotel stay. Fresh flowers, your favorite scented candles and fluffy towels can make a huge difference. OH try warming up your robe so it’s nice and toasty after you take a shower.
Take it up a notch by setting up a self-serve coffee bar in the kitchen, keeping cold drinks in a mini fridge, or laying out a robe and slippers like you’d find in a fancy hotel. If you really want to commit, print out a fake “Do Not Disturb” sign for your bedroom door and enjoy some uninterrupted relaxation 😉
Indulge in Vacation-Style Food and Drinks
Food is a huge part of any trip or at least it is for us, so don’t settle for your usual meal routine. Instead of cooking the same things you always do, order takeout from a restaurant you haven’t tried before or make dishes inspired by your favorite travel destinations. A homemade pasta night can transport you to Italy… basically lol! Remember this is about what will make you feel like you’re having a vacation.
Personally I believe that trying a new restaurant even in your hometown is just as fun of an experience!
Of course, drinks matter too. Whether it’s an iced coffee with whipped cream, a fun cocktail, or a fancy bottle of wine, treating yourself to something different adds to the vacation feel. Bonus points if you serve it in a fancy glass with a little garnish like they do at resorts.

Have a Technology Detox (At Least for a Few Hours)
One of the best things about a real vacation is the chance to unplug from daily stress. If you spend most of your time scrolling through emails or endlessly checking social media then your staycation won’t feel like a true getaway.
Try setting aside a few hours each day to completely unplug!
Put your phone in another room, turn off notifications, and be fully present in whatever you’re doing. Whether it’s reading a book, listening to music or just enjoying the quiet, giving yourself a break from screens can make your time feel more intentional and relaxing.
Plan a Themed Night In
If you’re not going out, bring the vacation vibes to you with a themed night. Set up a movie marathon based on a dream destination like Paris-themed films with wine and cheese or tropical beach movies with homemade frozen margs.
You could also do a spa night with face masks, bubble baths and soothing music, or a game night with travel trivia and cocktails. The key is to do something out of the ordinary that makes your staycation feel special to you!!
Sleep Like You’re on Vacation

A bad night’s sleep can ruin a real vacation and guys it can definitely ruin a staycation too. Upgrade your sleep setup with fresh sheets, blackout curtains, or even a white noise machine. If you can, sleep in a different room for a change of scenery.
Most importantly, let yourself sleep in or take a midday nap without guilt. Vacation rules apply here, and that means rest is a priority.
Make It Feel Like a Break, Not Just a Weekend at Home
The biggest mistake people make with staycations is treating them like a normal weekend. To really enjoy it, commit to the experience. Wear an outfit that makes you feel good, pack a small overnight bag even if you’re not leaving the house, and allow yourself to fully relax without worrying about everyday responsibilities.
Whether you’re exploring your city, lounging at home, or cooking something new, the point of a staycation is to enjoy a break from the usual. With a little planning, you can make it feel just as refreshing as an actual trip but without the stress of airports, crowds, etc!
And that is all for now my friends, I hope you have a wonderful time exploring your city and enjoying your staycation!
