Hobbies serve a lot of purposes and bring meaning and joy to our lives. But one of the most important things they can (and should!) do is bring out our creative side!
Before we get more into crafty and creative hobbies though I want to immediately put this disclaimer out there- HOBBIES ARE FOR FUN NOT PERFECTION. Okay, okay maybe I needed to be reminded of that too but hey I am human too. Anyway it’s a serious reminder because it is so easy in this social media world to see people who are exceptional at their craft and think that we have to be like that too. But those are literally professionals that have turned it into a job. And while that is so cool it also means something that started as fun and a creative outlet becomes a job that like any other job, has major downsides. So keep off of social media for your crafty hobby unless you are just browsing for ideas.
And don’t let yourself fall into any comparison traps. That will suck the fun out of. your hobby faster than you can say DIY.
Now that we have had that little heart to heart it’s time to get into the focus of today- finding you a crafty hobby to try out. Below I chat about some favorites that you have probably heard of and a few that maybe you haven’t! So let’s get into it so you can get to planning and head out to get the supplies you need (BTW a lot of them are super inexpensive, no need to break the bank just to try a new hobby!).

Crafty Hobbies To Try Out: Get Creative!
Ultimate guide to crafty hobbies to try out-
Hand embroidery –
First things first is one of my personal favorites which is hand embroidery!
The options for what this looks like is limitless. You can embroider clothes, decor, gifts etc! And what you embroider is literally any and everything you want. Some recent favorite hand embroidery projects of mine to give a little inspo are-
Burp cloths for my new baby:
A hydrangea hoop (left in the hoop as decor):
This t-shirt that I covered in flower embroidery except I somehow never got a picture of the finished product and it’s in storage right now soooo appreciate the progress picture please 😉
Also most people (myself included) start this hobby with some simple embroidery kits that include all of the supplies you need. Plus they are generally pretty cheap. Here are a few I would start with-

Knitting or crocheting –
Alright this is a classic for a reason, you can make amazing things. The supplies are readily available at local craft stores and there is endless instruction videos and content online.
I will say though that unlike some of the other crafty hobbies we are going to talk about this is one that does involve a fair amount of learning to get started. However- it is also one of the most rewarding and in my humble opinion (as someone who hasn’t learned LOL) the most impressive.
So grab some yarn and commit a full weekend to embracing this crafty hobby and watch a bunch of tutorials! Or better yet- reach out to your grandma or other women in your community to teach you in person. I’m positive there is some sweet lady nearby who would love nothing more than to teach this skill to the next generation!
Scrapbooking-
This is a personal favorite of mine but I think it has a bit of a bad rep from the early 2000s. Scrapbooking can totally look like what our moms did while drinking wine with their friends in the basement (wait that actually sounds awesome) but it can also be way more modernized. In my opinion combining that style of scrapbooking with modern “junk journaling” is the most fun!
It’s a great way to display memories in the form of both pictures and random items that you saved from those occasions.
It’s also an easy one to get started with. A bit supply heavy but once you have a lot of the supplies it gets less and less expensive unlike some crafty hobbies! But the actual skills to get going are virtually zero. Just get the book, paper, pictures/ memory items and get to crafting.
If you are looking to get started with some cute supplies I highly recommend Scrapbook.com (not affiliated/commission I just really like them I swear) and looking at the brands: Echo Park, Carta Bella, Pinkfresh Studio and Reminisce.
Ceramics –
This is another one I haven’t gotten into … YET. But I do see it in my future but my distant future when I don’t have a little kiddo running around. Maybe a “she’s in kindergarten” project haha!
But it’s probably one of the coolest crafty hobbies you could learn as well as one that is super practical because you can actually USE most of the things you make. Plus you will become the coolest gift giver in your circle if you show up with pottery that you made yourself!!!
Sewing-
Speaking of practical but still cool crafty hobbies we have sewing.
This is one that has a big initial price tag though you can totally get a cheaper sewing machine that will get the job done without any flashy features! I have a middle of the road one (for someone who has a lot of hobbies) that 100% gets the job done. I can’t find the exact model anymore but Brother (the go to sewing machine brand!) has an identical one here.
Needlepoint-
Hand embroideries upscale cousin is needlepoint. Needlepoint is all the rage on socials and for a good reason- it’s a great screen free hobby that results in fun, unique and gorgeous home decor and even things you can wear!
The design options are insane now that it has caught on and no matter what you want to needlepoint I can basically guarantee that it exists somewhere online for you to get. There is also local needlepoint stores in most cities in America that I recommend you head to first to get started and get advice and guidance from seasoned pros.

Upcycling clothes-
This is a hobby I started doing as a thrifty college kid and have never looked back. I absolutely love turning an item into something totally new with a pair of scissors, and/or thread and needle. The options are endless OH and until about 5 years ago I did it all the time without a sewing machine. Though if you have a sewing machine or access to one (a lot of libraries have ones you can use!) it does expand the options for what you can do.
This is one that I not only enjoy doing but I absolutely loveee scrolling Pinterest and looking for ideas and inspiration. So if you’re interested head to Pinterest and start getting inspired. Then go through your closet and see what you have that you could give a whole new life to.
Also- fabric scissors will make this wayyyy easier! I’ve used these ones for 2 years now and they are still going strong AKA sharp.
Candle making-
If you enjoy burning candles in your home then why not try making them!
I started candle making a few years ago as a gift to give others and become addicted. Oh and BTW if like me you have kids and/or pets at home that make you nervous having an open flame then get a candle warmer. The scent is the same and with no risk of candles being left burning or knocked over.
Jewelry making-
Another crafty girl hobby that results in actual things that you can wear and rock all the time!
Also one that is pretty easy to get started with making beaded goods and then once you get going the options are so endless. And no- it’s not just the options you had when making jewelry when you were a kid. There is soooo many tools, beads, clays etc that are available to you now online. So you can genuinely make anything that you creative mind can come up with!
Basket weaving-
Alright this is PEAK grandma hobby and for that reason alone it is on my list to try out soon! Seriously can you imagine having a basket in your home that you. wove. yourself. I do think this is a harder crafty hobby that you will want some real guidance on. Check out if you have any classes in your area (try your library!) or at least go to YouTube and get some good instructions.
