There are so many places within the USA that are hyped up and I would honestly argue that most of them deserve it. The vibrancy and food scene in NYC is worth the hype. The views of the Grand Canyon? Incredible. The atmosphere of Miami is never under described. But there is so many more places to visit in America that fly under the radar and that’s what we’re going to focus on today.
Below we are going to get into the least overhyped travel destinations within America (at least in my humble opinion) that deserve so much more attention and hype than they get!!!
Let’s get into it and hopefully you will leave inspired to plan a unique trip this year-

Travel Destinations Within the USA That Aren’t Overhyped
Unique and fun travel destinations within America:
Destination Idea: Portland, Maine
Portland Maine is first up because it is one of those places that you vaguely hear about a lot but never really hyped up or talked about negatively either. But it’s a gorgeous smaller city to visit with amazing food and so much more to offer.
Known for tons of unique breweries and styles that are rare and hard to find elsewhere and matched with an amazing food and hiking focused community surrounding them itโs the perfect trip for craft beer lovers.
Destination Idea: Savannah, Georgia
Savannah Georgia is one of the most gorgeous places Ive ever been- with itโs stunning Spanish moss covered trees, haunting history, and beautiful buildings not only is it the perfect backdrop but it also has tons of great restaurants and bars โ that all is included for a much more reasonable price tag than a lot of the other destinations on the Southeast coast.
Destination Idea: Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
Alright hear me out here guys- Lake Geneva is the picture perfect lake town where boat cruises, boutique shopping, and wine by the water take center stage. With historic mansions and spa resorts, itโs a perfect low-key destination that feels cozy and classy at the same time! Not only is it not overhyped I would argue it’s truly underrated!
Destination Idea: St. Augustine, Florida
The oldest city in America and itโs literally filled with charm (and less Florida craziness than other places in my experience). Beautiful cobblestone streets that feel like you are in Europe but for half the cost, access to beaches, and tons of cute shopping โ prohibition kitchen is my favorite restaurant and Im drawing a blank on the hot sauce store but itโs sooooo good! Look at my face the first time I went in for evidence-

Make sure though with St. Augustine to avoid rainy season because the whole town is only like 1 inch above sea level lol and it floods like crazy.
Destination Idea: Capitola, California
Capitola is a colorful, beachy town that feels straight out of a storybook. With vibrant waterfront cottages, sandy toes, and adorable boutiques, itโs a quiet but quirky destination for anyone who wants oceanside charm and sunshine. Kind of feels like youโre in a coastal Italian town not America ๐ย
Destination Idea: Asheville, North Carolina
Ashevilleโsย Blue Ridge Mountainsย are breathtaking year round. Visit in the spring for beautiful scene, the summer to embrace the vibrancy and brewery culture, fall for the most stunning views of foliage you’ll ever see or winter to get the perfect touch of snow and souther charm.
Oh and don’t miss out on the Biltmore Estate- the largest residential estate ever built in the USA and its beauty rivals castles I have seen around the world!
Plus, as a NC resident, please go and support western North Carolina- the hotels, breweries, etc that are up and running again after the horrific hurriance Helene and our support and tourism!!ย

Destination Idea: Napa Valley, California, USA
How cool is it that we can stay domestic and still visit one of the most amazing places in the world for wine?
Napa Valley is the embodiment of luxury wine. From chardonnays to pinot noirs be prepared to be impressed by amazing wines from the most picture worthy vineyards.
There also is so much to do around Napa as well including farm to table restaurants that if you like food even half as much as wine you will have to check out when visiting.
Destination Idea: Stowe, Vermont
Located in the Green Mountains, Stowe is like a quintessential New England town, perfect for a cozy getaway. Think Gilmore girls and you will start to picture this super underrated town!!!
Known for its charming covered bridges, scenic hiking trails and INSANELY vibrant fall foliage, Stowe also transforms into a winter wonderland with top-notch skiing and snowboarding. Stay in a charming inn or cabin, and enjoy a cozy fire after a day of exploring. Highly recommend visiting in the fall or winter to get the most of the experience!
Destination Idea: Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
Carmel-by-the-Sea is a charming coastal town offering cozy cottages, art galleries, and beautiful beaches.
Seriously guts this townโs storybook-like atmosphere is like straight out of a movie: with its quaint streets and cozy inns, makes it the perfect place for a quiet, romantic getaway.
Stroll along the scenic coastline, explore the local shops, and enjoy fine dining by the sea. Carmelโs peaceful, picturesque vibe is ideal for a relaxing retreat, especially during the cooler months.
So far from overhyped too that you may not even know it exists!!!
Destination Idea: Fredericksburg, Texas
Fredericksburg is a charming town in the Texas Hill Country, known for its wineries, German heritage, and cozy bed-and-breakfasts. Visit in the fall or winter to enjoy wine tastings, local festivals, and the townโs full on southern and warm hospitality.
My dream is to stay in one of their charming little inns! And then explore the local vineyards, antique shops, and German-inspired restaurants. Fredericksburgโs small-town charm and scenic countryside make it a perfect little USA based getaway.
And that is all for now! I know that overhyped or under-hyped is subjective and in the eye of the beholder but I truly believe these destinations don’t get the tourism love that they deserve! I hope this inspires you to plan a fun and unique trip within our beautiful country this year!!!
