How To Enjoy Spending Time Alone (even if you’re extroverted!)
Steps for liking spending time with yourself:
1. Start with Self-Compassion
First things first, be kind to yourself. I know, I know, it sounds a bit cliché, but hear me out. If you’re constantly criticizing yourself or feeling guilty for wanting alone time, it’s hard to enjoy it. I started by cutting myself some slack and treating myself with the same kindness I’d offer a friend. Give yourself permission to relax and enjoy your own company.
2. Find Activities You Love
This might seem obvious, but it’s crucial. Think about hobbies or activities that genuinely make you happy. For me, it was diving into a good book, trying out new recipes, or taking long walks in the park with my favorite playlist. When you do things you love, you start associating alone time with joy and fulfillment.
3. Create a Cozy Space
Make your environment a sanctuary. I transformed a corner of my room into a cozy reading nook with fairy lights, comfy pillows, and all my favorite books. Whether it’s a nook for reading, a space for yoga, or a comfy spot to binge-watch your favorite shows, having a dedicated, inviting space can make alone time something to look forward to. The main thing is making a space that feels comforting and welcoming to you (and don’t worry about anyone else liking it).
4. Set a Routine
Incorporate solo activities into your daily routine. I started small, dedicating just 15 minutes a day to something I enjoyed alone. Over time, those minutes stretched into hours because I began to crave that peaceful, uninterrupted time. Consistency helps build a habit, and before you know it, spending time alone becomes a natural part of your day.
5. Disconnect to Connect
Put your phone on airplane mode, close your laptop, and disconnect from social media for a bit. Trust me, the world won’t end if you’re offline for an hour. When I first did this, it felt strange, but soon, I realized how much more present and connected I felt to myself. It’s refreshing and incredibly liberating.
6. Reflect and Journal
Writing down your thoughts can be incredibly therapeutic. I started journaling about my day, my feelings, and even random musings. It’s a great way to process your emotions and gain insights into what truly makes you happy. Plus, it’s fun to look back and see your growth over time.
7. Treat Yourself
Remember, alone time is a treat, not a chore. Plan special dates with yourself. I’d sometimes take myself out to my favorite café, order a fancy dessert, and people-watch to my heart’s content. Whether it’s a solo movie night, a day trip, or just a pampering session at home, make it special.
8. Learn Something New
Challenge yourself to learn a new skill or hobby. I took up painting, and while I’m no Picasso, the process was incredibly rewarding. Learning something new keeps your mind engaged and gives you a sense of accomplishment, making solo time productive and fun.
9. Meditate and Breathe
Sometimes, just being still is all you need. I started meditating for a few minutes each day, focusing on my breath and letting go of stress. It’s a simple practice that helps you reconnect with yourself and find peace amidst the chaos.
10. Embrace the Silence
Finally, learn to embrace the silence.
It might feel uncomfortable at first, but silence is where you truly meet yourself. In those quiet moments, you discover your inner thoughts, dreams, and desires. It’s in the silence that you find clarity and self-acceptance. You are the only person at the end of the day that you need to enjoys company so keep that in mind when the silence feels boring and/or overwhelming at first.
So, there you have it—steps to help you start enjoying spending time with yourself. It’s a journey, and like all journeys, it has its ups and downs. But trust me, the destination is worth it. Here’s to becoming your own best company!
