Baking Soda Magic: 11 Ways To Clean With It!
11 uses for baking soda when cleaning-
Cleaning use: deodorize EVERYTHING in your house
Alright first things first when we are talking about baking soda we have to chat about it’s amazing ability to make anything stink less.
Your fridge? If you don’t have a box of open baking soda in it yet you need to. Oh and change it out every 6 months to keep the benefits.
But you can use it for deodorizing more than just the fridge! Smelly closet? Garage? It doesn’t matter baking soda in the box or sprinkled throughout and vacuumed up hours later can really help to get those smells out.
Cleaning use: get sticky labels off
I am looking directly at HomeGoods here when I say certain stores are the bane of my existence since they put the price labels on materials that don’t easily come off and are always visible?! Anyway tiny rant over- baking soda can come to the rescue! Mix with a little water and rub on the sticky label with a rag or cloth (imo paper towels just hurt the situation) and watch it basically roll off.
Cleaning use: clean (inside) the dishwasher
It seems silly that dishwashers need cleaned but I don’t make the rules.
Seriously if you haven’t cleaned the inside of your dishwasher guys you will be grossed out… but running a cleaning cycle with 2 tablespoons of baking soda tossed in first and you will have a fresh dishwasher. Which of course makes your dishes feel cleaner and that weird smell your dishwasher starts to get? It’ll disappear!
Cleaning use: freshen up jewelry
I like to call this my jewelry bath time! Warm water and baking soda mixed (3 to 1 ratio) and a little soak time for your jewelry will leave it sparkling. And it’ll get any built up grime and dirt off the ring and out of the little crevices. Want it to really dazzle? Grab a toothbrush (I keep a stock pile of cheap ones from the dollar store for cleaning) and give it a scrub while it’s soaking in the baking soda bath. This ensures that all of the little nooks will get cleaned.
Need evidence? Look at my ring sparkling after a baking soda bath!!!
Cleaning use: tackle residue and stains on pots and pans
Residue building up on cookware is gross and annoying to get out. There are sooo many products pushed for this too but at the end of the day warm water, baking soda, and a little determination can scrub those gross patches right out. Remember to use a scrubbing device though that is correct for the material of your pans.
Cleaning use: grout!!
Our last house was from the 80s and I swear when we moved in the grout hadn’t been cleaned since the 80s. At first I tried using some specific grout cleaning products which worked but not amazingly well and cost an arm and a leg. So when I found out that baking soda would help I immediately made a paste of it with water and used an electric brush cleaner and was super happy with the results. It worked slightly better and was an affordable option.
Cleaning use: soften towels and bedding
Another amazing magic trick of baking soda is that it can help to loosen up the matted fibers of towels and bedding. This helps them return to their original softness.
It ALSO helps with any built up smells that could be lingering especially any mildew/ moist smells that can built up on bath and hand towels over time.
Cleaning use: refresh your mattresses
Next up on the magic journey of baking soda is it’s amazing ability to refresh your mattress!
No one wants to think about how stinky and dirty mattresses get over time… it’s kinda a gross thought I get it. Which is why they need both cleaned and de-oderized. So lets take care of all that with some baking soda.
Sprinkle a hearty layer of baking soda on the top of your mattress. Then let it sit for about 60 minutes. After that use a brush attachment on your vacuum and suck up all the baking soda and just like that you’ll have a refreshed mattress.
Cleaning use: DIY toilet bowl cleaner
Baking soda is the OG toilet cleaner.
Just sprinkle it along the edges and mix with the present water – then use your toilet brush to scrub any marks or rust stains off the toilet bowl. Easy, efficient, and oh so cheap!
Cleaning use: freshen up carpets and fabric furniture
Just like your mattress baking soda can help pull those lingering smells out of carpets and fabric furniture. Smells that are inevitable when you actually live in your home and use your furniture.
Again you are going to sprinkle the baking soda over the surface of furniture or the carpet (for carpet focus the most on areas that are heavy foot traffic). Then let it sit and marinate for an hour while it pulls up the smells and funk. Then vacuum it all up!
Cleaning use: unclog drains
Baking soda has a magic ability to remove built up grime and that includes in drains! Pour it down clogged drains and run warm water to help detach the grime and help your pipes flow a lot better.
Cleaning use: remove scuffs
The final magic trick of baking soda is removing scruffs!
Walls, shoes, etc… anywhere that can get scruff marks you can use baking soda. Create a paste with baking soda and warm water and use a cheap toothbrush to scrub off the marks.
And that is all for now my friends!
